Dr. Bock filming DocumentaryDr. Darrell L. Bock has been a powerful voice in the Christian Community for decades. Often sited for his vast expertise in Biblical Studies, Dr. Bock’s impact is expansive both in Christianity and global academia. Born in Calgary, Canada, to parents Bertram and Arlene Bock, Dr. Bock accepted the Lord when he was 18 years old after a year at SMU in Dallas. Afterward, Dr. Bock transferred to the University of Texas at Austin where he majored in European History and explored his personal interests in radio, television, and film. Feeling called to the ministry, Dr. Bock and his new bride Sarah (Sally) Painter moved back to Dallas where he earned a Th.M. in Old Testament from Dallas Theological Seminary. The next few years would be spent at the University of Aberdeen where Dr. Bock’s thesis on Luke’s Use of the Old Testament for Christology helped earn him a Ph.D. in New Testament under the guidance of I. Howard Marshall. Along the way, Dr. Bock’s pastoral skills were also developed. He became involved in Young Life Ministry while at the University of Texas and began preaching extensively while studying in Scotland. Upon returning to the U.S., he became an Associate Pastor at Trinity Fellowship Church in Richardson, TX where he still serves while volunteering for other community and civic causes.

Getting at the Heart of a New Testament Scholar

Which professor impacted you most in pursuit of New Testament Studies?
“There would actually be three from D.T.S.: Harold Hoehner for New Testament Studies, Elliott Johnson for Biblical Exposition, and Howard Hendrix for communication.”

Why did you choose The University of Aberdeen, Scotland, for your Ph.D. work?
“I went to Scotland to study with Dr. Howard Marshall. I wanted to study with a solid evangelical in a European context.”

In your opinion, who is the greatest New Testament Scholar ever?
“No one in particular leaps out. I do have great respect for the work Martin Hengel did at the University of Tübingen. F.F. Bruce is also important for combining high academics with a commitment to the truth of Scripture.”

What advice would you give current New Testament Students?
“Get comfortable in the original languages and the context in which they were written as soon as possible. Also, read the text in front of you. There is danger in turning to other texts too early.”

What project are you currently work on?
“Currently I am editing a major Jesus Book. I am also developing a book on Enoch with Dr. Jim Charlesworth from Princeton.”

How would you describe yourself?
“Pretty focused and yet laid back at the same time.”

Dr. Bock teaching in India
“It is a privilege being able to share the Word through teaching and writing. When I travel internationally, it amazes me to think that my work is having an impact around the globe. Believers must remember that the gospel requires engagement with the culture.”

– Dr. Bock speaking on global impact

Impact of the Professor

“If you are looking for careful historical answers to the baffling assumptions of The Da Vinci Code, Bock provides them. If you are looking for what theories of Christian origins inspired Dan Brown, Bock reveals them. If you are looking for what Mary Magdalene was really like, Bock describes her. In short, the code behind The Da Vinci Code needs to be cracked... Bock cracks it.”
—Professor Scott McKnight, North Park Univ. on Bock’s Book Breaking the Da Vinci Code.

"Having worked closely with Dr. Bock over the past few years, I have seen his heart and passion for Jesus Christ surfaces in many ways. Perhaps the most meaningful to me is that he is an ambassador for Jesus to a skeptical culture and an advocate for true spiritual transformation to Jesus' followers."
—Darrell Yoder, ITS Director of Operations
